Lady Pirates win team title at Shawnee

SHAWNEE — The Byng High School girls tennis team brought home the gold, and the Pirates were runners-up at the Shawnee Tournament last weekend.

The Lady Pirates totaled 33 points, followed by Stillwater at 27 and Ardmore with 22.

Cortney Blackburn claimed the No. 1 Singles championship with a hard-fought victory over Stillwater’s Libby Roark.

Bri Sanders and CeCe Sayre captured the No. 1 Doubles title with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ardmore’s Makalia Barber and Makila Case.

Spencer Brown finished third in No. 2 Singles, besting U.S. Grant’s Harisella Perez for the trophy.

BHS Sisters Aubrey and Livi Colombe brought home the No. 2 Doubles championship with a tight 6-7, 6-4, 10-7 victory over Hayden Powell and Grace Bryant of Shawnee.

The Lady Pirates return to the courts Wednesday at the Duncan Tournament, hosted by the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.


The Pirates fell just short of the team title. Norman won the championship with 31 points, while Byng was second at 31. Host Shawnee was third at 23.

In No. 1 Singles action, Byng’s Caden Manuel was the runner-up after dropping a tough, marathon match to Shawnee’s Will Jordan by a 6-3, 3-6, 7-10 score.

The Pirates No. 1 Doubles tandem of Gage Hatcher and TJ Goodman won the championship with a three-set victory over Norman’s Calen Hopper and Lanelton.

In No. 2 Singles, Jake Tyler finished second after falling to Norman’s Ira Millington 6-2, 6-1 in the title match.

Byng’s No. 2 Doubles combo of Kaden Gilmore and Ryan Garcia also settled for second after a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Norman’s Feibrich and Frenhiser 6-3, 6-1.

The Byng boys squad is back in action Monday at the Duncan Tournament hosted by the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
