OKLAHOMA CITY — The Byng High School boys tennis team finished fifth at the Class 4A State Tennis Tournament, held Friday and Saturday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
The Pirates trailed only Ada (32), Crossings Christian (24), Grove (19) and Henryetta (19).
“The team went through some ups and downs during the season but played well during the state tournament to finish the season on a positive note,” said head coach Toby Sanders.
The Pirates were led by singles players Caden Manuel and TJ Goodman.
Manuel defeated Caleb Toss of Chisholm in a tough three-set match 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 to finish fifth in No. 1 Singles.
Manuel finished his spring with a 27-13 mark.
“He was definitely playing his best tennis of the year at the end of the season,” Sanders said.
In No. 2 Singles, Byng’s TJ Goodman dropped a tough 6-3, 6-4 decision to Jordan Knox of Henryetta in the third-place match. He finished the year 7-4 in singles and 16-11 in No. 1 Doubles action.
The Byng team of Ryan Garcia and Kaden Gilmore knocked off Oologah’s Karson Davis and Cody Elrod in the No. 2 Doubles seventh-place matchup. They finished the season at 12-11.
In No. 1 Doubles, Byng’s combo of Jake Taylor and Gage Hatcher finished 1-2 at state. Carter Senger and Evan Senger of Elk City elminated Taylor and Hatcher in a hard-fought 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 matchup in consolation play.
“Taylor ened up playing in three different divisions this year,” Sanders said.
Taylor and Hatcher were 5-5. In No. 2 Single, he went 9-5 and in No. 2 Doubles, he was 9-4.
A Hatcher-Goodman combo finished 16-11 in No. 1 Doubles.
