Allen girls rally past Calvin in semifinals

ASHER — Kinsey Nix tossed in 17 points and Jaycee Watkins finished with 11 as the Lady Mustangs overcame deficits of 14-7 after one quarter and 23-19 at halftime to rally past Calvin 51-44 Thursday in the semifinals of the Pontotoc Conference Tournament in Asher.

Nix and Watkins each converted two 3-point baskets.

Calissa Childers, with eight points, and Sunzie Harrison, with seven, also made scoring impacts for Allen.

Shantel Potter paced the Lady Bulldogs in a losing effort with 16 points, including a pair of treys. Teammate Hannah Harris finished with 12 points, and Brooke Miller ended up with nine off three 3-point shots.

The Lady Mustangs, 4-1, outscored Calvin 32-21 in the second half, including 16-7 in the third.

Allen improved to 4-1 on the season, while Calvin dropped to 8-3.



Vanoss 68,

Stonewall 36

Three Vanoss players reached double figures as the Lady Wolves cruised to a 68-36 victory over the Stonewall Lady Longhorns Thursday in the semifinals of the Pontotoc Conference Tournament at Asher High School.

Caitlyn Byrd, who knocked down three treys in the contest, finished with 17 points. Lizzy Simpson followed with 15 points, and Emrie Ellis, who sank a pair of 3-point shots, ended up with 14 points.

Holding a 17-16 edge at the end of the first quarter, Vanoss went on an 18-11 run through the second quarter in building a 35-27 halftime cushion. The Lady Wolves then outscored Stonewall 33-9 in the second half, including 15-6 in the third quarter.

Dawsyn Lyon led the Lady Longhorns with 12 points, including one trey, and Ashley Hayes also nailed one 3-point bucket in finishing with eight points.

Vanoss (No. 3 in Class 2A), stayed unbeaten at 8-0 on the season, while Stonewall fell to 4-4.



Tupelo 61, Calvin 51

Seth Foreman fired in 25 points as the Tupelo Tigers knocked off the Calvin Bulldogs Thursday in boys consolation bracket play in the Pontotoc Conference Tournament.

Michael Moralez and Austin Vick also reached double figures with 13 and 11, respectively. Foreman and Moralez each converted one 3-point shot.

Connor Dunn topped Calvin with 19 points, including two treys. Charlie Harden was next on the Calvin scoring chart with 13.

The Tigers improved to 4-5, while the Bulldogs dipped to 5-6.



Stratford 43, Stonewall 38

The Stratford Bulldogs got 17 points from Caleb Miller in a narrow 43-38 win over Stonewall in consolation play Thursday at the Pontotoc Conference Tournament.

The Bulldogs led 22-19 at halftime and went into the fourth quarter with a 31-25 advantage.

Stonewall outscored Stratford 13-12 in the final frame but the comeback bid fell short.

Russell Caton added eight points for Stratford, while Payton Wood chipped in seven.

Dakota Johnson led the way with 10 points for Stonewall, while both Clayton Findley and Jarred Vaughn finished with nine points for the Longhorns.

Stratford improved to 2-1 on the year, while Stonewall dropped to 1-6.
