ADA — The ninth-ranked Ada Cougars may have gotten back on a roll at just the right time.

Coach Ronny Johns’ team will head into this week’s Class 5A Regional Tournament after defeating three ranked teams last week to end the regular season.

Ada defeated Seminole (No. 15 in Class 4A) 6-5 on Monday, whipped Durant (No. 11 in Class 5A) 10-2 on Tuesday before stopping Carl Albert (No. 1 in Class 5A) 4-3 on Thursday.

The 5A Regional Tournament begins Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Cougar Field when Ada meets Tulsa Central in a first-round matchup. No. 13 Bixby will then take on Coweta at 3:30 p.m. with the two losers battling in a 6 p.m. elimination contest.

On Thursday, a winner’s bracket game will start things at 4 p.m. and another elimination game will follow at 6:30 p.m. The regional championship game is set for Friday at 4 p.m.

Ada will enter the regional fray with a 19-12 record and a lot of confidence.

“We should have confidence. We’ve been playing pretty well,” Johns said. “We’ve lost some games, but it’s not due to a lack of confidence or a lack of competing or a lack of intensity.”

Most of Ada's losses have been due to a lack of hitting. But the Cougars have shown more often than not that they can swing a mean bat.

“Some days we hit and some days we don’t, but we’ve been pretty consistent with our defense and pitching,” he said.

The Cougars played one of their best defensive games of the year in their victory over the top-ranked Titans, including turning two double plays to get out of jams in the sixth and seventh innings.

“We just hope to keep it going into the regional. We’re looking forward to it,” he said.

Ada is very familiar with two of its three regional foes. The Cougars met — and demolished — both Bixby and Coweta en route to winning the championship at the Bixby Tournament last month. Ada outscored the two Tulsa-area foes by a combined 26-0 in those two tournament games.

But — as Johns was quick to point out — that was then and this is now.

“We should probably be the favorites, but at the same time, we have to be very cautious that we don’t get overconfident. Those teams are not going to come in here and lay down,” he said.

“Coach (Pete) Sangirardi does a great job at Bixby and so does coach (Steve) Dunn at Coweta. They’ll come in here and make us earn our wins. They’ll come in here and compete,” Johns continued.

The veteran Ada High coach, whose team last hosted a regional tournament in 2003, said a new season will begin Wednesday.

“You get to this time of the year everyone starts over. Everyone is zero and zero, and it’s a whole new ballgame,” he said.

The Cougars have leaned heavily on seniors Alex Leach, Chase Sanders, Clint Bowker and Ty Gower this spring.

“I’ve been really happy for those four guys. They have really turned it up a notch and have led by example. I hope we can continue on and get to the state tournament for those guys,” he said.

The Class 5A State Tournament is scheduled for May 10-13 in the Tulsa area.
