SEMINOLE — The Ada High School boys’ golf team, sparked by a solid first round, won the Class 4A Regional Tournament Monday at Seminole’s Jimmie Austin Golf Club.
The Cougars’ Tim Simpson captured medalist honors after firing a 78 in the first round and finishing up with an 81. He edged out Wagoner’s Luke Falwell by one stroke. Falwell shot a 74 in the opening round, but struggled with an 86 in the second.
Two other Ada players — Ben Pruitt and Sam Brown — tied for fifth place which also helped propel the Cougars to the team championship. Pruitt shot an 80 and 84 while Brown carved out a 79 and 85.
“I am always happy when we win tournaments. We played our best round of the year in the first round and our worst round of the year in the second,” said Ada head coach Robbie Powell. “We really showed mental fatigue in the afternoon and were lucky that it did not cost us the tournament. It was a difficult day with the wind and it really showed on every team in the afternoon.”
Also for the Cougars, Jacob Thorley posted rounds of 85 and 90 while Ross Kemp ended up with an 88 and 92.
Ada will compete in the Class 4A State tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Lake Hefner North Golf Course in Oklahoma City.
“We will need to play much better during the afternoon round next Monday if we hope to compete next week at the state tournament,” Powell said. “I am very proud of the kids though. We are regional champions and also have the individual regional champion. We are playing pretty well going into state.”
