Blaine Hale’s historic round has Oklahoma near a return to the NCAA men’s golf national championship for the ninth consecutive season.
Hale’s 8-under 62 during Tuesday’s second round propelled him into the individual lead at the NCAA Pullman Regional, where OU is in sole possession of second place and eight shots above the team cutline with one round remaining.
Hale's 18-hole round is the lowest in OU history and captured Palouse Ridge Golf Club’s course record.
OU (13-under) is seven shots behind leader Texas A&M (20-under). Georgia Tech (19-under) is in third place, BYU (17-under) is in fourth and Colorado State (12-under) is in fifth.
The top five teams advance to next week’s NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Arkansas. OU’s 10-under 270 team score matched the lowest postseason round in school history.
The Sooners played the last nine holes at seven strokes under par with 13 birdies — four of which belonged to Hale.
The senior was bogey-free and had eight birdies in all, including three consecutive on the 10th, 11th and 12th hole. He’s 10-under (130) through 36 holes in the tournament — one shot behind OU’s record set by Brad Dalke (129) at the 2017 Stanford Regional.
“Blaine was phenomenal today,” OU coach Ryan Hybl said in a release. “Tomorrow is a big day for us and we need everyone clicking.”
Hale’s previous career low was a 64 set at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational during the 2017 fall season. His lone collegiate win came during the 2018 fall season at the Gopher Invitational, where he shot a 7-under 206.
OU junior Garett Reband shares ninth place at 6-under 134 after shooting an even-par 70 Tuesday. He was tied for the lead after shooting 6-under in round one.
Redshirt junior Quade Cummins is tied for 17th individually (4-under 136) after shooting 67 in the second round with five birdies.
Dalke is tied for 35th place through two rounds at even-par 140 after shooting 73 in the second round. Freshman Patrick Welch shot 2-over 72 and is in 40th.
