Ada — The trial of a former Ada firefighter, Jason Smeltz, began Tuesday morning in Pontotoc County District Court. Jury selection was completed this morning, with enough time for both attorneys to make their opening arguments before the break at 11:30 a.m. Smeltz has been charged with using a computer to put another person in fear of physical harm or death. The charge stems from an April 2013 incident that resulted in the arrest of Smeltz's wife, Laura Elizabeth Smeltz. It was filed in June 2013. The state said that it would show a police video made on the night of the incident. The defense argued that Smeltz was upset with Ada police because he knew that his wife was not intoxicated at the time she was arrested (tests eventually showed she was not). Laura Elizabeth Smeltz was arrested and charged with public intoxication. The defense also argued that during her six-hour stay in jail, Smeltz's wife was strip-searched. The trial reconvenes at 12:30 p.m.
