Special to The Ada News
On Saturday, the Coon Hunters Kennel Club will award the $40,000 grand prize to the winner of the CHKC World Coon Hunt Championship which will conclude the week long competition now underway in Ada, Oklahoma.
More than 600 coon hunters from more than 26 states are for the grand prize, which be awarded late Saturday evening at the conclusion of the final four hunt in areas around Ada.
The announcement will take place at the Pontotoc County Agri-Plex, 1710 North Broadway in Ada, according to Cheyenne Starns, president of the Pontotoc County Coonhunters Association.
The CHKC Coon Hunt Championship is a competitive event that utilizes a point system to score the various aspects of the sport. No animals are killed during the competition.
“This is a major event for those of us who enjoy this type of hunting and the dog breeding and training which is special to this sport,” Starns said. “The PCCA is also pleased that this event will have a positive impact on the Ada economy through the purchase of food, lodging, entertainment and other services by hundreds of competitors who are here for this event.”
The week long CHKC event will also feature a free “Youth Shootout” on Saturday with $3,000 in cash awards for seniors (ages 13-18) and juniors (ages 12 and under, accompanied by an adult).
Billed as the “fastest growing Kennel Club in the World,” CHKC is owned by Mark McCaskill and Chase McCaskill of Elmore City and is managed by Redgy Ramsey of Whitesboro, Texas.
In addition to this CHKC event, the PCCA will host its annual “Pete D. Andrea Memorial Hunt” on March 14th and 15th in Ada. The annual hunt has been held for more than 50 consecutive years.
Then on June 14th there will be another competitive hunt which will provide scholarships for students. According to Cheyenne Starnes, these hunts rank among the top 12 coon hunting events in the U.S.
