Junior pitcher Austin Simpson struck out nine and allowed just one hit to help the Latta Panthers blank Stonewall 5-0 in the fifth place contest of the 2013 Latta Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's championship game between Byng and Asher was not completed by press time.
Latta 5, Stonewall 0
Stonewall only managed two base runners throughout the game. Tyler Campise had a leadoff single in the top of the first. He advanced to second on a ground ball and to third on a passed ball. However, he was thrown out at the plate attempting to score. The Longhorns' (5-9) only other base runner was due to a walk in the fifth.
Latta (10-4) scored its first two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Brady Johnson drew a leadoff walk, then stole second and third. Kade Hayes followed with an RBI single. After stealing second, Hayes advanced to third on a sacrifice fly by Parker Henderson and scored on a wild pitch to put Latta up 2-0.
The Panthers added a single run in the second and two more in the fifth to seal the win.
In the bottom of the second, Nick Wilson doubled, then scored on an RBI double by Tristan Monroe for a 3-0 LHS margin. In the fifth, Henderson started things off with a single. Courtesy runner Kele Parnacher stole second and then scored after a base hit by Wilson.
Tristan Wood and Michael Alexander both singled to load the bases before the final run scored on a Stonewall error.
Latta finished with nine hits, including two apiece by Hayes and Wilson.
The Panthers' next action will be on Tuesday at Tupelo before they have back-to- back games on Thursday and Friday at Dale and at Byng.
Stonewall hosts Silo on Monday and Moss on Tuesday.
