Women’s Basketball Downs Southeastern

Ada — The East Central University women’s basketball team earned an 81-68 win over arch rival Southeastern Oklahoma State in a key Great American Conference game at the Kerr Activities Center.  The win kept the Lady Tigers (17-8, 12-7 GAC) in a tie for third-place in the GAC standings, just a game out of second.

ECU was led by junior Erin Walling, who tallied 21 points and added two assists and two steals.  Senior Ashley Robison added 15 points and nine rebounds, which gives her career total 725 boards.  The Tulsa, Okla., native recently claimed the Lady Tigers career rebounding record from Gina Farmer (1995-97), who had 680 career rebounds.

The first half looked like it may go the same way as the first game of the season with the Savage Storm (13-12, 10-9 GAC).  After ECU scored the first points of the game, Southeastern started a small run, scoring the next seven points in the opening three minutes.  The Savage Storm held on to the lead for the next 4:30 minutes before the Lady Tigers forced a 14-all tie, with an 8-3 run.

ECU kept pushing and took a lead over the next four minutes with an 8-1 run that built the lead out to eight.  The Lady Tigers controlled the scoreboard until an 8-0 run by Southeastern tied the game a 27, with 4:40 left to play.  However, ECU pushed ahead and used a 10-3 run in the final four minutes to take a 37-30 lead into the locker room.

The game remained close in the opening two minutes of the second half before ECU built the lead out to double-digits with a 5-0 run and 16:42 left on the clock.  The Lady Tigers held onto at least a 10-point lead for most of the half, with Southeastern cutting the deficit to eight just briefly in the middle of the stanza.  ECU kept the momentum going and led by as many as 17 points before earning the 81-68 win.

The key to the game came on the offensive glass and the ability of the Lady Tigers to finish their second-chance opportunities.  ECU earned an 18-6 lead in offensive rebounds and scored 25 second-chance points to the Savage Storm’s six.

The Lady Tigers will play their final regular-season game, Saturday, March 1 when Arkansas Tech comes to the Kerr Activities Center for a 2 p.m. game.  Between the men’s and women’s games ECU will honor its 10 seniors, with four being on the women’s team.  The Lady Tigers will honor Ashley Stafford, Alex Tucker, Ashley Robison and Alycea Price.
