Ada police to enforce new insurance law

Ada — Local motorists are reminded to carry proper liability insurance coverage, as failure to do so may result in seized license plates and expensive fees.

Under the Temporary Motorist Liability Plan, enforceable beginning the first day of 2014, any law enforcement officer can physically remove the license plate of a vehicle in which the driver does not possess valid insurance coverage.

If this occurs, the issued ticket serves as the license plate and must be kept inside the vehicle at all times until the actual plate is retrieved by the violator. The Ada Police Department will be enforcing this law.

A violator must first pay a $140 ticket at the municipal court clerk’s office. Next, the violator must take the receipt for the paid ticket — plus proof of valid insurance coverage — to the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office and pay a $125 administration fee.

The violator must then pay for compulsory insurance coverage at the rate of $10 per day, with a $50 minimum. This temporary insurance fee is calculated from the date of the ticket until the date valid insurance coverage is obtained.

The violator has 10 working days to obtain valid insurance coverage and retrieve the license plate. If the violator has not retrieved the plate in 10 working days, the sheriff’s office will dispose of it and the temporary coverage will no longer be valid.
