Councilman’s slot up for grabs in elections

Ada — One of the Ada City Council’s first tasks in 2014 will be finding someone to replace former Councilman Shane Sweeney.

Sweeney announced Monday that he was stepping down so he could spend more time with his business and family, effective Dec. 31. The announcement leaves Sweeney’s slot on the council open until the council chooses someone to fill the vacancy.

Whenever a council member resigns midway through his or her term, the board taps someone to fill the vacancy, according to city regulations. That person will remain in office for the rest of the term or until a successor is elected.

Sweeney said Tuesday he was appointed to the Ward 2 seat on the council in 2009 after Councilman Charles Vest resigned to take a job in Muskogee. Sweeney was re-elected in March 2012.

The 2nd and 4th Ward seats on the council are both up for election in the spring. Sweeney represented the 2nd Ward, which covers northeast Ada.

Councilman Guy Sewell represents the 4th Ward, which is roughly equivalent to the southwest section.

The filing period for the upcoming primary election runs from Feb. 4 through 6. The primary is set for March 4, and the general election will take place April 1.

The person tapped to fill Sweeney’s unexpired term could seek the seat in the primary election if he or she wishes, city attorney Frank Stout said Tuesday.

Ward 2 residents who are interested in filling the vacant slot should contact City Hall at 436-6300.
