Stonewall gym gets sweet new makeover

Stonewall —    The Murphy-Roberts Gymnasium in Stonewall recently got itself a facelift, and it’s one everyone in the school system can be proud of.

Heck, I might be the happiest of all. Along with the fancy, smancy upgrade to a ProAction Flex Floating Floor System (it looks way cool), the kind folks kept yours truly in mind during the redesign.

Instead of cramping the styles of bookkeeper Laura Steele and clock specialist Larry Rayburn, I now have what Stonewall girls basketball coach Brian Davis calls “a central media section” right behind the scorer’s table.

I haven’t been able to confirm the rumor that this new media area is being named “The Jeff Cali Press Suite.”

But I digress. Murphy-Roberts has never looked better.

“We love it. It’s very nice. It’s been a great addition for our student-athletes,” Davis said.

The basketball teams have already competed on the new floor during this summer’s Stonewall Team Camp.

“The kids just absolutely love it — the way the ball reacts, the springy feel to it,” he said.

But that’s not all. Stonewall's Longhorns now have their own swanky, new student center to hang out in, equipped with an amazing 65-inch big-screen television. The student center is part of a brand-new cafeteria recently added to the campus.

Shoot, that would be a great place to watch some "Walking Dead" this fall, especially if I can get the sweet cafeteria workers to make me some of those delicious homemade rolls they regularly serve to Longhorns big and small.

“We plan to use it for game film review. But it’s also just a nice place for our students and athletes just to hang out,” Davis said.

I’m anxious to give the Jeff Cali Press Suite a try and watch local athletes perform on the new floor this fall. Congratulations, Stonewall.
