Sulphur grad headed to National High School Rodeo Association event

Sulphur —    A Sulphur High School graduate and his partner are headed to the 2014 National High School Finals Rodeo next month after winning a team roping state championship in Texas.

Kade Lewis, who graduated from Sulphur in May, and his partner, Jase Holder of Soper, won the team roping state title at the Texas High School Rodeo Association state finals June 8-14 in Abilene, Texas.

The champs will now head to the national finals, scheduled for July 13-19 at the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

During the state competition, Lewis and Holder outlasted a field of 100 teams from all across Texas to bag the title. The Top 10 teams from a series of regional events advanced to the THSRA state rodeo.

Lewis and Holder got better each round of the state event. Their first ride was completed in 7.4 seconds before the pair scored a 6.9 in the second round and a blistering time of 5.19 in a 15-team shootout for the title. Their three-round total of 19.49 was well above the second-place finishers of Monte Jack Starns and Ty Arnold of Midway, Texas, who finished with a total of 21.40.

The THSRA state finals will be broadcast on RFD-TV July 25-Aug. 12.

At the national event, Lewis and Holder will compete against approximately 1,500 contestants from the United States, Canada and Australia. The Texas state team roping state champions have won the past five national titles.

Lewis will get a good tune-up for the national rodeo by competing in the IYFR (International Youth Finals Rodeo) in Shawnee July 6-11.

Lewis is the son of Rush Lewis and Jaime and Corey Brown of Sulphur. He plans on attending Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant on a rodeo scholarship.
