Former Ada High athlete Brooks Thompson headed to wakeboard nationals

Stillwater —    Former Ada High athlete Brooks Thompson is part of the Oklahoma State University Wakeboard team that will compete in a national tournament this weekend in Shreveport, Louisiana.

The Cowboys will leave Stillwater on Thursday and compete at nationals Friday through Sunday (May 30-June 1).

Thompson, who was an All-State soccer player for Cougars in 2012, and his OSU Wakeboard teammates are ranked No. 3 in the latest Collegiate USA Wakeboard Top 20 poll.

The Cowboys earned a spot in the national tournament by winning the South Central Region last September, also held in Shreveport. At that event, OSU star Matt McCaleb took down the title and led three other members on his team to victory. Reid Paxton (Men’s B), Garrett Black (Men’s C), and Alexis Cadaret (Women’s B) added to their totals.

McCaleb, ranked No. 10 as an individual competitor, is the grandson of Chickasaw Nation Ambassador Neal McCaleb.

Oklahoma State tallied 580 total points while Louisiana-Monroe and Ole Miss tied for second at 490 each.

“The Cowboys snuck up on everyone at Shreveport in September. They have gone from not qualified for nationals to No. 3 in less than six months,” according to usawakeboard.com. “With one of the best group of male riders in the country combined with a decent women’s pair, they are in a position to win it all.”

A big boost to the Cowboys’ chances of winning a national title is the return of wakeskater Patrick Williamson from injury in time to join the OSU team at nationals.

The OSU Wakeboard Team started 20-plus years ago as a waterski club and has morphed into a competitive wakeboard team. Within the last three years, the team has become more competitive in the collegiate ranks.

The Cowboys have competed in Boarder Wars, hosted by Red Bull, and the Dallas tour stop of the Collegiate Wake Series. Currently, the team has become popular enough in the state and region that wakeboarding has become a recruitment adventure, drawing students to OSU.

Members of the OSU wakeboarding team include McCaleb of Edmond, Thompson of Ada, Paxton of Southlake, Texas, Black of Skiatook, Avery Sawyers of Broken Arrow, Shelby Gillean of Azel, Texas and Robert Dunlap of Edmond and Williamson of Shawnee.
