Two people who allegedly participated in the mistreatment of a child, then captured it on video and posted the result on a social media site, could be charged with child abuse and other offenses.
The Seminole County District Attorney’s Office is expected to file charges Wednesday against Konawa residents Tracy Casteel and Joshua Whittington, who are accused of participating in the abuse of Whittington’s 8-year-old son. Officials have not decided yet whether the third defendant, a 15-year-old boy who allegedly kicked the victim, will be tried as an adult.
Casteel, 28, and Whittington, 33, appeared Friday in Seminole County District Court for separate detention hearings in front of District Judge Gayla Arnold, who ruled that authorities had probable cause to take the couple into custody. The judge set Casteel’s bond at $75,000 because she did not have a criminal history as far as authorities could tell and because she was not as involved in the alleged abuse as Whittington.
Whittington’s bond was set at $250,000 based on his criminal history and his greater involvement in the alleged abuse.
