Men’s basketball earns first win of 2013-14 over Dallas Baptist

Ada — Wayne Cobb Court turned out to be a friendly place for the East Central University men’s basketball team, as they picked up their first win of the 2013-14 season by defeating Dallas Baptist 76-67 in non-conference action.

The Tigers (1-2) were led by senior Colby Carr and redshirt freshman A.J. Moutry.  Carr tallied season bests with 22 points and six rebounds.  Moutry tallied a career-high 21 points and added four assists, four steals and two rebounds.

ECU opened the game with an 11-4 run in the first six minutes, but the Patriots (1-2) slowly fought back and tied the game at 14, with a 10-3 run.  The Tigers responded and used a 6-1 run to take control of the rest of the half and went to the locker room leading 35-25.

The teams were even in the first four minutes of the second stanza, but ECU then used a 10-2 run over the next 4:30 to push its lead to 16.  DBU used a 10-2 run of their own to get back within eight points (52-44), but the Tigers responded with a 7-1 run over the next two minutes to build the lead back to double-digits.

The Patriots used one final push to cut the deficit to six (66-60), with just over a minute to play, but ECU scored five points in the next 19 seconds to secure the win.  The teams were even again for the remaining time and the Tigers earned the 76-67 win.

ECU had a strong game all across the stat sheet, with all nine players recording at least two points and one rebound, while five also added an assist. The Tigers shot 50.9 (27-of-53) from the field and 36.4 (8-of-22) percent from three point range.  The Patriots were held to 44.4 (20-fo-45) percent shooting and 33.3 (7-of-21) from beyond the arc.

While the teams were close in rebounds (32-31), the Tigers made the most of their second chances and scored six points to DBU’s one.

ECU will now get ready for its first Great American Conference games of the 2013-14 season when Ouachita Baptist and Henderson State come to Ada next week.  The two Tigers teams will battle Thursday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m., with Henderson State coming to town for a Saturday, Nov. 23 game.
