Shawnee — The threat of wintry weather has canceled a tournament in Shawnee and wiped out Thursday semifinal games at another tournament in Calvin.
The Ada High girls and boys teams were voted as the top seeds in the 2013 OBU Bison Invitational that was scheduled to tip off Thursday in Shawnee, but tournament officials canceled the entire event.
Ada officials were working on adding extra games to the schedule after being notified that the Bison Invitational was scrapped.
“We’re working on a couple of different scenarios right now to get some more games, but nothing is official yet,” said Ada girls coach Christie Jennings after lunch time on Thursday.
Bethel, which was also part of the Bison Invitational, is hastily trying to put together a tournament for Dec. 19-21. Jennings said both Ada teams would accept invitations to that tournament if everything falls into place.
“They’re waiting for special permission from the OSSAA,” Jennings said.
If the Bethel tournament falls through, Ada boys coach Ron Anderson would like to find some teams to play next Tuesday.
As of now, Ada officially won’t open the season until Friday, Dec. 13, when Tecumseh visits the Cougar Activity Center.
“We just want to play. We need to play,” Jennings said. “We had two of our best practices all year this week, and we were really looking forward to playing.”
Members of the Ada girls basketball squad were none too happy to hear they won’t be playing at all this weekend.
“Oh my gosh, they’re really disappointed, especially those seniors. I think it would have been easier to handle if we had snow all over the ground, but we don’t yet and that’s kind of making it tough,” Jennings said.
As of 1 p.m. Thursday, the main roads within the Ada city limits were clear.
“It’s even more frustrating since we aren’t getting the weather yet,” she said. “Hopefully, it works out that we can get some games in, even if we have to pick up a couple of extra regular-season games over the next two weeks.”
Semifinal games in the 2013 Pontotoc Conference Tournament in Calvin were canceled Thursday morning, but officials had not decided by press time whether games would be played today or Saturday.
As of noon Thursday, tonight’s contest between local rivals Byng and Latta inside the Bill Koller FIeld House had not been canceled.
“It doesn’t look good, but we won’t cancel it until school is canceled,” said Byng athletic director Bruce Plunk. “If we can’t play it (tonight), then we’ll reschedule it for sometime later this month.”
Plunk urged fans to contact school officials at Byng or Latta sometime today to see if the games will go on as scheduled.
