Familiar foes await Ada at Plainview

Ada —

When they roll into Plainview tonight, Ada fans will note several familiar Ada faces, beginning with Indians head coach Chris Berus, who coached the Cougars for several years. The Berus family is augmented in Plainview by a couple of former Cougar players as well.

Berus, who will be entering his fifth year as head coach of the Indians football team, was also recently announced to replace long-time coach Johnni Bell in the position of athletic director.

Plainview went 9-3 in 2012 and hopes to go further on the arm of second-year starting quarterback Taber Jordan and preseason All-Star by Class RB Austin Carrera.

Also of note is freshman Brock Berus, an Ada product of sorts, having been born here. Now 5-11 and 180, he will be wearing No. 20 for the freshmen and the varsity.

In the freshman game, he will be going against his old classmates, the highly touted ninth-grade bunch.

Berus has kept track of Ada head man Matt Weber’s Cougar teams and was impressed by Ada’s return to prosperity. The Cougars enjoyed their best season since 2004, going 12-1 with the loss in the semis against Clinton.

“I was really impressed by Ada last year. I got to see the semifinal game. I saw a lot I had not seen in years. It was a great run. And I see it as just the start of a long run for Ada,” Berus predicted.

Berus said former Ada Cougar Ryan Luhmann (Sr. FB03) has been with him the whole time.

“We walked onto the campus together. He is my offensive coordinator and another Cougar, Phillip Tweedy (Sr FB06), is back for his second year,” Berus said.

There are lots of the former Cougars on the staff. Berus' daughter Kennedy is an eighth-grader and team manager and a fine athlete in her own right.
