“ ... then everything went black as it seemed like the whole team dog piled me. It was an amazing feeling ... best feeling ever,” said Daron Ellis, senior defensive back for the Ada Cougars way back when in 2004.
Fans were beginning to wonder when, if ever, Ada would beat Glenpool. After losses in district play the previous two years, the ‘when’ was answered, :00. Double-OT and Ellis put on his jump high tennies and knocked down a pass to win the game.
Ellis, now a member of the parks and recreation staff for the City of Ada, remembered it as if it were just yesterday, perhaps because he and his mates settle down at the Ellis household once in awhile to review highlight tapes of the season.
“There was not a wide receiver to my side so I was on the tight end and he slipped behind me. I took a couple of hard steps and jumped higher than I had ever jumped before. I think I knocked it away with my left hand,” he said.
The man in charge on that day, on that play, was defensive backs coach Mart Leming (2004-06).
“During the time out, we talked over every situation as far as what everyone in the secondary was supposed to be reading. It was a little play action pass,” said Leming, an assistant coach at alma mater Sulphur 2007-present.
“Daron was a bit out of position but made such a tremendous effort to recover. It was his greatest high school game, something he will no doubt always remember,” said Leming. “I was just glad to be a part of that game, probably the best game I have been a part of.”
Ellis is now a ‘nephew in-law’ as Leming describes it.
The week had been a series of ups and downs. Junior defensive lineman Cody Bolin was killed in automobile accident on Thursday. The funeral was scheduled for the Saturday morning with the playoff game that evening against Glenpool.
