New beginning for ECU men's team

Ada —

After a 2011-12 season where the East Central University men’s basketball team finished 5-21 overall and 2-14 in Great American Conference play, the 2012-13 season will be a season of new beginnings.

The head coach will be familiar, but the student-athletes on the court will have a new look, as the Tigers return one player from 2011-12 and will have 15 new players on the court.

Second-year head coach Mac McConnell is looking to turn the program around and get it back to winning. Only this season he had the opportunity to pick his own players and will be able to mold the group into his style of play.

“The keys this year will be to stay healthy, enjoy the game of basketball and to have a positive attitude,” said McConnell. “We have 16 players that all want to play and that will be tough, so they will need to earn their playing time and keep down the negativity.”

McConnell likes to play natural basketball, one that the fans can appreciate, and is looking for a much better season.

As senior Walker Whitworth was bombing in the final five 3-point shots of his remarkable Ada High career, he was resetting the school’s triples record at 151. Across the way at the A-Town Barber Shop, barber Erick Gray did not even know he owned the record of 146, much less that someone was breaking it.
