East Central University volleyball team announces recruiting class

Ada —    The East Central University volleyball squad will have four new members for the 2014 season, with the signing of Mackenzie Davis, Madeline Mayer, Lily Porsa and Taylor Turner.

“I'm very excited about this group of signees,” said head coach Dave Thorn. “They have a nice combination of size, speed and skill and have the potential to be very good.”

The signing class includes Davis, MB, 6-1, Fr., Plano, Texas (East); Mayer, MB, 6-1, Fr., Denton, Texas (Denton Calvary Academy); Porsa, libero, 5-7, Fr., Murphy, Texas (Plano East); and Turner, S/RS, 6-0, Fr., Edmond (Deer Creek).

Davis comes to ECU after spending four years on the Plano East Senior High School varsity team with fellow signee Porsa. Besides volleyball, Davis was a member of the National Honor Society and Student Congress. She also played club volleyball for Mad Frog.

“Kenzie is a tall athlete who will be a very good college middle,” said Thorn. “Not only does she have good skills, but she has the potential to get a lot better.”

Mayer was a four-year starter on the Denton Calvary Academy that claimed the TAAPS 2A state championship in 2012 and 2013. She also helped the Lions advance to the UIL 5A District playoffs as a sophomore and freshman.

Mayer earned All-Texas First Team honors in 2012 and 2013 and was an all-district honorable mention her first two seasons. Mayer also played club volleyball for Dallas Premier, which earned a U17 national championship in 2013.

“Madeline has good size and skill,” Thorn commented. “She played setter as well as middle hitter in high school, which shows her versatility. She is a hard worker who will help our middle position.”

Porsa was a teammate of Davis at Plano East Senior High School for the past four seasons. During her prep years, she claimed both offensive and defensive player of the year honors. Porsa also competed in club volleyball for Dallas Skyline.

“Lily has the speed and quickness needed to be an elite libero,” said Thorn. “She also has good ball control skills that could allow her to be a significant contributor very quickly.”

Turner was a starter for the Deer Creek varsity team for four seasons, where she helped the team to a regional and conference championship. The 2012 and 2013 all-conference first-team selection left Deer Creek as the leader in career kills (585), hitting percentage (.366), blocks (137), points (904) and assists (782).

“Taylor is a good setter who has experience in a 6-2 and 5-1 offense, which shows her versatility,” said Thorn. “She is tall and has good mobility, something every coach is looking for. She can be a very good college setter.”
