The Byng Pirates were so close to a berth in the Class 4A state championship game, they could taste it.
But what happened during the bottom of the seventh couldn’t have left a worse taste in their mouths.
Plainview appeared to be dead in the water, trailing 3-0 with two outs in their final at-bats. But the Indians — who have been on a roll since winning the 2013 David Hill-Ryan Prescott Memorial Tournament in Byng — scored four improbable runs in a seventh inning neither team will ever forget and dealt the Pirates a crushing 4-3 defeat in a tense semifinal game Friday evening at Edmond Memorial’s Byron Graham Field.
