All the Byng Pirates needed to do was defeat the Poteau Pirates for the second time in the Class 4A Regional Tournament on Friday at Town Creek Park, and the locals would be headed to the state tournament later this week. Byng's celebration was put on hold.
Poteau used a six-run, sixth-inning rally to down Byng 6-5 in the regional final to force the winner-take-all championship contest that will take place Monday at 4 p.m. in Poteau. The title game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but rain in eastern Oklahoma forced the if-necessary game to be pushed back to today.
It marked the second time that LeFlore County's Pirates used a rally to stave off elimination. Before Poteau's rally doomed Byng, Poteau used a nine-run sixth-inning rally to eliminate the Broken Bow Savages (23-13) by the score of 13-7 after entering that frame down 6-4.
