Latta pushes past Roff

Roff —

The Class 2A second-ranked Latta Panthers pounded out 11 hits Tuesday evening en route to an 11-6 victory over Class A No. 3 Roff.

With the win, Latta moves to 7-1 while Roff falls to 9-5.

“They are a good baseball team. I was concerned coming down here,” said Latta head coach Eddie Collins. “Overall, it was a very good win.”

Latta got the bats going early. Leadoff hitter Brandon Mills singled to start the game. He moved to third on a single by Jake Collins before scoring on a throwing error. Bryce Harris singled and drove in Collins to give Latta an early 2-0 lead.

Roff got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second. Andy Antonio reached on an error and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike Anderson. Cade Carpenter reached base by another Latta error, and Antonio moved to third. Andres Torres knocked in Antonio for Roff’s first run. Bryce Antonio then singled to right center to score Carpenter and tie the game at 2-2.

Latta came back in the top of the third and scored four more runs. Jake Collins led off with a double off the right center wall. Harris drew a base on balls, and Kade Hayes singled to load the bases. Zac Dansby was hit by a pitch to force in the first Latta run of the inning. Wyatt Ryan then singled and scored Harris. Hayes crossed home off of a fielder’s choice. Brady Johnson then reached first off an infield single to load the bases again. Ryan scored the fourth run off an error to give Latta a 6-2 lead.

Both teams plated a run during the fourth inning to give Latta a 7-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Roff inched closer as Cruz Villafranco, C. J. Johnson and Carpenter all singled. Roff plated two runs to get within 7-5.
