Ada —

The scoreboard at Stokes Field read Byng 5, Latta 3. But on the Monday before regional play, both teams were more concerned about what lies ahead than they were about getting a victory in the latest installment of the Byng-Latta rivalry.

“A lot of times, people don’t look as crisp on a day like today. We weren’t very crisp, but I didn’t think they were either,” said veteran Latta head coach Eddie Collins. “It’s one of those days where you hope to get some things done. We saw some good things and saw some things we need to work on.”

The second-ranked Panthers will host a Class 2A Regional beginning Thursday at Panther Park. Latta will meet Mounds in an 11 a.m. first-round matchup, while No. 17 Hennessey battles Community Christian at 1 p.m. Two games will be played on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. with an if-necessary game set for Saturday at 1 p.m.

No. 7 Byng will make the 140 mile-plus road trip to Poteau for a Class 4A Regional Tournament that begins Wednesday, with a game between the host and 15th-ranked Pirates taking on No. 20 Broken Bow at 11 a.m. Byng will then meet Muldrow at 1 p.m. Two more games will follow later Wednesday, with two games scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m. and the if-necessary game slated for 1 p.m. Friday.
