Blanchard — The 16th-ranked Ada Cougars overcame seven errors and withstood a three-run sixth inning by No. 7 Blanchard to hold on for a 7-6 baseball victory on Saturday.
“I’m extremely pleased with how we competed. We made pitches and plays when we had to have them,” said Ada head coach Elliott Alberson.
Micah Simmer went 3-for-3 from the plate and scored a pair of runs, while Walker Whitworth and Reid Kinder each were 2-for-4 as Ada held an 11-10 edge in total hits.
Oshawv Frazier worked the first 4 2/3 innings for the victory, as he allowed three earned runs off six hits with six walks and four strikeouts. Simmer and Scott Johnson also saw mound duty for Ada, and Dalton Wolf nailed down the save, pitching the seventh inning and allowing only one hit.
The Cougars’ big inning was the fourth as they scored four runs off five hits, highlighted by back-to-back two-run singles from Wolf and Jake Boone.
Ada, ranked No. 16 in Class 4A, took a 1-0 lead in the first inning off Whitworth’s RBI single to plate Scott Johnson. Gabe Simons’ RBI groundout tied it up in the second before Blanchard tied it up in the bottom half of the inning.
Leading 6-2, the Cougars picked up their final run in the fifth when Simmer singled and scored with the help of some Lion errors.
There were 11 errors in the game, seven by Ada and four from Blanchard.
The Lions closed the gap with a single run in the bottom of the fifth and three more scores in the sixth to clip the deficit to one.
Ada’s clash with rival Byng on Monday was canceled. The Cougars (12-3) travel to Purcell today for a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
