Konawa splits pair with Holdenville Monday

Konawa — Defense keyed a big third quarter as the Konawa Tigers broke open a close game at halftime and cruised to a 60-42 victory over the Holdenville Wolverines on Monday night to close out the 2013-14 regular season.

Trailing by a slim 25-24 margin at the break, the Tigers went on a 20-7 run in the third and outscored Holdenville by a 16-10 count in the fourth.

“We played much better the second half. We were a little under the weather. Zach (Snow) was in and out of the game to get some rest,” said Konawa head coach Gordon Garner. “The key in the second half was our defense. We were able to get turnovers and did a better job on the boards. We also shot better the second half.”

Snow, a 6-foot, 4-inch senior, paced the Tigers with 14 points to go with six rebounds. Sophomore Haydoekeyo Tsosie followed with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and 5-10 senior Dylan Tatum finished with 11 points, including one trey to help fuel the Konawa offense.

Branden Davis, a 6-7 sophomore, contributed nine points, including one 3-pointer, and pulled down seven boards for the Tigers. Junior Silas Larney tacked on seven points to go with three steals and Chance Yellowfish, another junior, filled up the box score well with nine rebounds, six assists and two steals to go with his five points.

Konawa, 10-10 on the season, will open Class 2A district play on Friday at home against Healdton.

The Lady Wolverines got off to a quick 20-7 start through one quarter and coasted to the 11-point win over the Lady Tigers.

Liz Davis sank two 3-point jumpers and finished with a game-high 15 points for Holdenville and Abby McElroy chipped in nine. Hayli Frederick tossed in seven points for the winners.

Brittany West paced Konawa with 11 points and Roshawn Warrior finished with seven points, 10 rebounds and three steals before fouling out. Reagan Scott was next on the scoring list with six. Dominique Lyon did not score, but snatched six boards.

“Our girls played hard. We made a run and cut it to eight and had our chances,” Garner said. “We did some things better, but we’ve got to cut down on our turnovers.”

The Lady Tigers, 6-14 on the year, will host Wewoka on Friday in their Class 2A district playoff opener.
