Stephenville, TX — The East Central University men’s basketball team faced its second ranked opponent of the 2013-14 season and fell 75-54 to No. 17 Tarleton State at Wisdom Gym in non-conference action.
The Tigers (2-4) were led by junior Brandon Lucas, with 10 points and four rebounds, while junior Jefferson Ocoro led the team with seven rebounds.
“We had a great opportunity to win tonight,” said head coach Ja Haven. “But we didn’t do the things that you need to do on the road against a very good team like Tarleton State.”
The Texans (6-0) opened the game on a 6-0 run and kept the Tigers off the scoreboard through the first five minutes of the game. ECU made their first run of the game starting with 12:49 left in the first stanza, scoring six-straight points to cut the deficit to one (10-11) over a 3:30 span. However, TSU then used a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to push the advantage to double-digits (10-20).
The Texans continued to hold the Tigers without a field goal for six minutes, increasing the lead to 14-29. ECU finished the final 3:15 by holding TSU without a point, but were only able to add five to their total to go to the locker room trailing 19-29.
The Tigers continued their momentum into second half, holding the Texans without a field goal for the first three minutes. ECU used an 8-3 run during the span to cut the deficit to five (27-32), with 16:43 left to play. However, the lead was quickly built back to double-digits, with 14:48 left on the clock (29-40).
The Texans kept the pressure up through the rest of the half, building the lead to as many as 22 before earning the 75-54 win.
ECU did a good job of holding TSU to the lowest point total of the season, as the Texans were averaging 102.2 points per game, with their lowest total of the season being 87 (vs. St. Edward’s) coming into the game.
The Tigers shot just 37 (18-of-49) percent for the game and allowed TSU to shoot 45 (25-of-55) percent from the floor.
ECU was strong on the boards, with both teams recording 37 rebounds. The Texans came into the game with a +16.8 rebounding margin over their opponents.
The Tigers will remain on the road for the next three games before returning to the Kerr Activities Center. The next outing for ECU is Thursday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m. against Harding in Searcy, Ark.
