Veteran Roff High School softball coach accepts job at Purcell

Roff —      Kathy Gregson says her move from Roff to Purcell will be bittersweet.

Gregson, who has served as Roff High School’s head softball coach for the past nine years, is headed to Purcell to take over the slow-pitch softball program and assist with fast pitch.

“It’s bittersweet. I’ve loved my time here at Roff. It’s not often people get to leave jobs like this on great terms,” Gregson said. “I’ve made great friends, but I’m excited about this new opportunity.”

Gregson served as head coach of Roff’s fast-pitch softball, slow-pitch softball and girls basketball her first two years before staying with the fast-pitch and slow-pitch programs the last seven.

In the classroom, she also taught algebra and geometry during her nine-year tenure.

“The biggest memory I’ll have is the staff we’ve had here at Roff. It made going to work every day a great experience,” said Gregson. “The people and closeness, the strong sense of family is something I can hopefully take to my next job.”

During Gregson’s run, Roff reached the state finals in slow pitch twice and fast pitch twice. Her most recent team reached the semifinals of the Class 2A state slow-pitch tournament earlier this week and finished the season with an 18-10 record.

Her nine years at Roff has been the longest stay since she started as a teacher/coach in 1993. She held softball coaching positions at Fletcher, Luther, Tecumseh and Crowder and was an assistant basketball coach during her time at Luther and Tecumseh.

Gregson’s teaching duties have not been set at Purcell, but she says she will likely teach math at the junior high level.
