East Central volleyball snaps losing streak

Ada —      The East Central University volleyball team snapped a seven-match losing streak with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-17) win over Arkansas-Monticello in Great American Conference action Friday evening at the Kerr Activities Center.

     The Lady Tigers (7-13, 4-2 GAC) were led by senior Noelle Cope, who tallied 11 kills, a .391 (11k-2e-23ta) hitting percentage and eight digs.

     ECU jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the opening set and kept the pressure on the entire set, not letting the Cotton Blossoms (11-11, 2-5 GAC) score more than four points in a row. The Lady Tigers went on to earn the 25-15 win.

     The second set was a much closer battle with six tie scores and two lead changes. UAM battled back from a three-point deficit to take a slight 18-17 lead, but the Lady Tigers tied things up again at 18. The teams traded the next two serves before ECU went up 21-19. The next four servers were again traded for a 23-21 scores, and it was the Lady Tigers who rallied for the final two points and the 25-21 win.

     The third set saw ECU jump out to an early 9-1 advantage, and they kept the pressure on the rest of the set. The Lady Tigers didn’t allow the Cotton Blossoms to score more than tw -straight points in the set until late and earned a 25-17 win.

     ECU had a strong offensive night, will all five starting hitters contributing at least five kills and a total of seven players earning one of the Lady Tigers' 46 kills for the day. ECU hit .267 (46k-15e-116ta) to a .065 (21k-15e-92ta) by the Cotton Blossoms.

Women’s golf team headed to Lawton

     ADA — The East Central University women’s golf team will be participating in its final tournament of the fall when the Tigers travel to Lawton for the Oklahoma Intercollegiate for Women, Oct. 20-22 at the Fort Sill Golf Course.

     The Lady Tigers will be one of 12 teams, including two from the Great American Conference. This year’s field is very strong, with half the field in the top 50 of the Golf Stat rankings and three in the top 25.

     Tarleton State is the top team in the rankings at No. 10, with Incarnate Word at No. 15, Midwestern State at No. 24, Newman No. 30, Cameron at No. 34, West Texas A&M No. 39 and Texas A&M Commerce no. 59.

     ECU will have a group of three juniors, one sophomore and one freshman on the course. Freshman Molli Taylor has participated in all four tournaments for the Lady Tigers this fall and leads the team with an 81 average.

     Junior Payton Taylor has been in two events and has an 85 average. Sophomore Sarah Delong is close behind with an 85.8 average after two tournaments. Junior Shay Shaw has also played in two events and has a 92.8 average.

     Junior Sara Posey will be playing in her first tournament of the season. She participated in two events, including the Oklahoma Intercollegiate, in 2012 and had an 88.5 average.

     In 2012, the Lady Tigers finished 11th, of 13, at the Oklahoma Intercollegiate, with Delong and Posey participating for ECU. Delong finished 58th with a 163 (82-81) and Posey finished 69th with a 172 (89-83).


Men’s golf set to travel to San Antonio

     ADA — The East Central University men’s golf team will be in San Antonio, Texas, for the Bruce Williams Memorial Invitational at The Dominion, Oct. 20-22, for at least the fifth-straight season.

     The Tigers will be one of 14 teams and two from the Great American Conference in the strong field. There will be six teams in the top-100 rankings from Golf Stat, including four from the top 50. The top-ranked team in the event is No. 11 Western New Mexico, with Northeastern State No. 39, Southeastern Oklahoma State ranked No. 41, St. Edward’s No. 45, St. Mary’s No. 71 and Colorado-Colorado Springs No. 77.

     ECU will have a group that consists of one senior, one junior and three sophomores. Junior Mickane Replogle has participated in the three previous tournaments this fall for the Tigers and leads the team with an average of 76.4. Sophomore Jason Goben has also seen action in all three tournaments in the fall and has an average of 76.6.

     Senior Jed Williams has participated in two tournaments and has an average of 79.7. Sophomore Blade Knox adds an average of 80.2 in two events. The final member of the team will be sophomore Drew Wickersham who is playing in his first collegiate tournament.

     A year ago, ECU finished 11th out of 12 teams at the Bruce Williams Memorial. The only member of this year’s squad to attend the event in 2012 was Knox, who finished tied for 58th with a 243 (89-75-79).

    As senior Walker Whitworth was bombing in the final five 3-point shots of his remarkable Ada High career, he was resetting the school’s triples record at 151. Across the way at the A-Town Barber Shop, barber Erick Gray did not even know he owned the record of 146, much less that someone was breaking it.
