Ada, Byng headed for 4A collision

Pirate head coach says both teams deserved better playoff fates

Byng —

It’s probably safe to say that the Class 4A district baseball playoff between the Byng Pirates and Ada Cougars should be one of the toughest head-to-head matchups in the state.

Class 4A seventh-ranked Byng entertains Ada in a best 2-out-of-3 series, beginning this evening at 4:30 p.m. at Stokes Field. Following that game, the two teams will square off again. A third and deciding contest, if necessary, will take place on Friday at 4:30 p.m. back in Byng.

“It has to be one of the toughest, with two good teams having to face each other,” said Byng head coach Shawn Streater. “I don’t know how this (pairing) was determined. I guess by geography. Ada is a lot better than their record shows.”

The Cougars enter the district with a 15-14 record and have won four of the last five and nine of their last 12.

“They’ve got athletes up and down the lineup, and they run the bases well,” Streater said. “They’ve definitely improved from when we played them earlier in the season.”

Byng beat Ada by an 11-2 count in the Cougars’ seventh game of the season. It was the Pirates’ sixth game of the year.

Entering the district playoffs with a 20-6 record, Byng has come out victorious in 14 of its last 15 games, losing to Plainview 14-4 in the finals of its own tournament last Saturday. The Pirates did bounce back to edge Class 3A ninth-ranked Henryetta, 7-6, on the road Monday.
