Byng blasts Coalgate in first round

Byng —

Byng pitcher Reid Wall was simply overpowering against Coalgate during a wind-blown first-round matchup at the 2013 David Hill-Ryan Prescott Memorial Tournament Thursday afternoon at Stokes Field.

Wall was perfect through three innings, striking out seven of the nine batters he faced. But after the host Pirates used an 11-run eruption in the bottom of the third frame to break the game open, Wall didn’t return to the mound for the fourth and final inning of Byng’s lopsided 13-0 victory.

“It was time to get people out and let others play a little bit,” Byng head coach Shawn Streater said of his decision to get Wall off the hill, despite his perfect game still being intact. “You don’t want to risk someone getting hurt in the cold weather, especially with playoffs next week.”

How dominant was Wall’s performance? The Byng senior needed just 32 pitches to mow down the Coalgate lineup and threw 26 of those for strikes. The only two Wildcat batters who didn’t strike out against Wall were Laredo Beal and Jerad Stephens, who each hit comebackers to Wall himself for routine plays at first base.
