El Reno turns back Ada twice

Ada —

The Ada High School girls and boys soccer teams were on the short ends of a pair of contests Tuesday, as visiting El Reno earned a 2-1 shootout decision in the girls game and a 2-0 shutout in the boys contest.

After a scoreless tie at halftime in the girls game, Ada got on the board first when Kylar Gillum scored off a breakaway goal via an Amaris Smitherman assist with 20 minutes to go. But El Reno forced overtime with a score just eight minutes before the end of regulation.

In the one-on-one shootout round against the opposition’s goalkeeper, El Reno came out on top, 3-2.

“We moved the ball around the field well and demonstrated some tough defense,” said Ada head coach Tom Morrison. “We have had a tough run losing some close games, but we are playing better and better with everyone.”

Morrison praised the play of Taylor Hodges, Leah Huling and Jordan Foster in the final non-district match of the season.

The Lady Cougars (2-7) host Madill on Thursday, April 4, to open district play.

In the boys contest, Ada fell into a 1-0 halftime hole after miscommunication in the back led to an open-net goal by El Reno.

The Cougars fared better in the second half with ball control, scoring opportunities and strong play on the back end, according to Morrison.

“We played the best soccer of the year for 35 minutes in the second half … attacking, aggressive and physical,” Morrison said.

El Reno tallied a late goal to push the advantage to 2-0.

Morrison praised the efforts of Todd Penick, Ryan Bond and Dillon Holder.

“They are adjusting to a new formation and roles, and they are doing great,” said Morrison.

Morrison also singled out Andrew Campbell, DeAngelo Dunn and Homar Morales for controlling the middle of the field and making great decisions.

“The boys are playing hard and improving against a tough non-district schedule. It’s time to see if it will pay off next week,” said Morrison.

The Ada boys (2-6) play at Southwest Covenant on Tuesday, April 2.
