The Ada News
Despite bitter cold and windy conditions, the Ada High boys golf team shot a 323 to capture the championship at the 2013 Seminole Invitational Monday at the Jimmie Austin Golf Course.
Wyatt Robson led the Cougars and won the medalist crown with a 74. Teammate Justin Powell was a shot back and finished second with a 75.
“It is always great to win a tournament. I feel like Wyatt and Justin played about as well as anyone could have played in the weather conditions that we faced today,” said Ada golf coach Robbie Powell.
Weatherford’s Quade Cummings was the only other golfer to shoot below 80, finishing his round in third place with a 79. Hilldale’s Chandler Puckett and Sallisaw’s Nick Pierce both carded identical scores of 80.
“I told all the kids that I thought par was about 82 (due to the weather), and I did not think that there would be more than five scores in the 70s. (Robson and Powell) shot two of the three scores that were in the 70s and were both really solid. They limited their mistakes in conditions that were really bad. It took a lot of concentration as well as a lot of mental and physical toughness. I was really proud of both of them,” Powell said.
Behind Cummings’ effort, Weatherford finished in the runner-up spot at 339. Sallisaw was third at 342, while host Seminole claimed the fourth spot at 354.
Kyle Rodrigues was next for Ada with an 86, followed by Blake Long at 88 and Casey Mankin at 96.
“Kyle, Blake and Casey all three battled hard but just made a few too many mistakes. I expect all three will get better as the season goes on,” Powell said.
Ada will head west next week (April 3-4) to compete in a tournament at Terra Lago Golf Club in Palm Desert, Calif.
