Defending Mid-America champs fall in first round

Ada — Things did not go well for the defending champion Sulphur Lady Bulldogs in the first round of the 2013 BFT Mid-America Classic.

The Lady Bulldogs fell to Class 4A  No. 4 Mount St. Mary 52-31.

The injury-plagued Lady Bulldogs, playing without two starters including junior standout Bailey Eldred (the only returning starter from last years state championship team), committed 25 turnovers in the contest and were a cool 11-of-38 (28.9%) from the field.

Mount St. Mary got on the board first, off of a drive by senior Amy Rischard at the 7:13 mark. After a Sulphur turnover ,Adrienne Berry scored giving the Lady Rockets a 4-0 lead.  Sulphur's first bucket came at the 6:00 mark as Bailey Bruce found Reilly Williams down low for the bucket. Berry scored again with 5:40 on the clock for a 6-2 advantage.

Hali Gilbert then knocked down a three to cut the lead to 6-5 at the 5:20 mark. Rischard then laid up a floater down the lane for an 8-5 MSM lead.

Sulphur tied it at 8-all after a long three by Katie Lancaster at the 4:45 mark. MSM went back on top 10-8 after a put back by Jordan Hagood. Rischard scored again with 2:00 minutes on the clock for a 12-8 lead.

They pushed the lead to six with :35 ticks on the clock after Berry stole the ball and laid it in. The last bucket of the quarter came with :15 seconds on the clock as Bruce drove inside and laid it in for a 14-10 score after one.

Sulphur scored first in the second as Gilbert drained a three to cut the lead back to one, 14-13 with 6:55 showing on the clock.

The Lady Rockets then went on an 11-0 run over the next two and a half minutes increasing the lead to 25-13 at the three minute mark.

Sulphur ended its scoring drought at the 2:32 mark after Allie Saunders knocked down two free throws to cut the lead 27-15.  After an MSM turnover, Lancaster drained another three to cut the margin to 27-18.

MSM ended the half off of two consecutive makes by Berry for a 31-18 halftime advantage.

Sulphur's Gilbert knocked down a three to start the third and cut the lead to 31-21 with 7:40 on the clock. That would be the only bucket of the period for the Lady Bulldogs as MSM's pressure defense would cause 11 turnovers.MSM took a 44-21 lead into the final quarter.

The Lady Rockets were never threated over the final eight minutes.

MSM had two players reach double figures, Berry led the Lady Rockets with 16 points and Rischard ended with 12. Hagood contributed nine and Kaelyn Bond chipped in seven.

Gilbert led Sulphur with nine points, Williams and Lancaster each had eight. Lancaster also garnered seven boards.

Sulphur will play at 3:00 p.m. Friday against Lomega MSM will play Ada in an 8 p.m. semifinal showdown.
