Latta boys turn back Lindsay

Latta —    The Class 2A second-ranked Latta Panthers went on a 19-10 fourth-quarter run and registered a 42-35 come-from-behind home victory over the Class 3A 17th-ranked Lindsay Leopards on Thursday night.

Latta, 19-3 on the season, trailed 7-6 after one quarter, 19-15 at halftime and 25-23 through three quarters before getting some big defensive stops and hitting its free throws down the stretch in the fourth.

“We had four really good minutes at the end. It was a tough ball game, but we were able to find a way to win,” said Latta head coach Donnie Husband.

Down 32-29, Brady Johnson popped in a 3-pointer to tie it up. The two teams then traded baskets before Treston Tully’s jumper put the Panthers on top for good.

Derek Epperly led Latta with a game-high 12 points to go with six rebounds. Kade Hayes followed with eight points while draining a pair of treys, and Brogan Cantrell ended up with seven points.

Johnson, whose late 3-pointer tied it, ended up with six points, five boards and four steals for the Panthers, and Tully snatched five rebounds to go with his five points. Ryan Stockton tacked on the other four points for the winners.

Caden Verble topped Lindsay with 10 points, including a pair of treys. Cooper Savage and Hunter Mason followed with eight points apiece.

Latta was scheduled to play at Sulphur on Saturday and at Washington on Tuesday to close out the regular season.

The Panthers will then host a three-team district playoff with Stratford and Wynnewood on Feb. 21-22. Stratford and Wynnewood do battle on Friday, Feb. 21, with Latta facing the winner on Saturday, Feb. 22.
