Vanoss girls bury Waurika

VELMA —    The Vanoss Lady Wolves, behind a relentless defensive effort, limited Waurika to single-digit scoring in each quarter and coasted to a 40-22 victory in a Class A first-round district encounter on Friday.

Vanoss, 11-14 on the season, advanced to play host Velma-Alma on Saturday in the district finals.

“I was extremely proud of our defensive intensity the whole game. Waurika is a good team that normally scores a lot of points,” said Vanoss head coach Dillon Snow. “We did a really good job of controlling the tempo and running out offense through until we got some good looks. This one was special for our seniors and also a great experience for the underclassmen, moving forward in our program.”

The Lady Wolves opened the game with a 10-3 advantage after one quarter, led 21-9 at halftime and built a 30-16 cushion through three periods. The most points Vanoss surrendered in a quarter was seven in the third. The Lady Wolves closed the game with a 10-6 run in the fourth.

Toni Prince paced Vanoss with 14 points and Kalli Mowdy finished with 12. Mowdy also nailed her team’s only 3-pointer. Also for the Lady Wolves, Taylor Smith tossed in six points and Crystal Frederick added five.

The high scorer for Waurika, which ended the season at 16-7, was Daley Gay with five points before fouling out.
