Ada — Softball Falls in Final Games of St. Mary’s Classic

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS – After a four hour weather delay to the start of the final day of the St. Mary’s Classic, the East Central University softball team fell to St. Edward’s, 1-3 in nine innings, and Texas A&M Kingsville, 6-12.

The Lady Tigers (1-3) were led by sophomore Leah Tigert, who hit .444 for the day on four hits, including two doubles.  Tigert also added one run and one RBI.  Senior Gina Mengwasser added a .429 average on three hits, with one RBI.

Sophomore Lacey Paulk had a strong day in the circle, throwing a complete game in the opener against St. Edward’s.  She tallied a 1.00 ERA, with four hits allowed and nine strikeouts.

ECU is now scheduled to participate in the Southeastern Regional Invitational, Feb. 7-9 in Durant, Okla., where they will play six games against NCAA Central Regional opponents.

Game 1 – St. Edward’s 3, ECU 1 (9)

In the opening game of the day, the Lady Tigers allowed SEU to earn the first run of the game in the top of the first to trail 0-1.

ECU got going in the bottom of the fourth when they tied the game at one.  Sophomore Autumn Suydam started things off with a double to left field.  After two outs were recorded, sophomore Sydney Dow set Suydam home on a single to right field.

The teams would both pick up their defense in the next four innings, forcing the game into two extra innings.  Unfortunately for ECU it was the Hilltoppers who were able to get the winning runs, scoring two in the top of the ninth.

Game 2 – Texas A&M Kingsville 12, ECU 6

Shortly after the conclusion of game one, the Lady Tigers hit the field to face TAMK and allowed the Javelins to score the first two runs of the game, with a run in the first and second.

As senior Walker Whitworth was bombing in the final five 3-point shots of his remarkable Ada High career, he was resetting the school’s triples record at 151. Across the way at the A-Town Barber Shop, barber Erick Gray did not even know he owned the record of 146, much less that someone was breaking it.
