Softball tournament set to raise money for baby's medical care

Ada — A Keep on Fightin’ softball tournament will be held Saturday, June 21, at the Chickasaw Nation Softball Complex in Ada to raise funds for Daxtyn Nathan Lee Balthrop, who was born two months early on March 17, 2014 to Robbie and Kristie Balthrop. The first game will start at 9 a.m.

While Daxtyn has been doing well while receiving medical care, the uphill battle is never ending as are the family’s burgeoning medical bills.  The Balthrops are avid softball players so the tournament seemed like a fitting way to aid the family and support their baby, according to Ryan Cornell, who organized the fund-raiser for his brother and sister-in-law.

Deadline to enter the tournament is 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 18. This will be a 6-4 or 7-5 (men/women) format and the entry fee is $120 per softball team. Teams are asked to bring their own .44/375 ASA bats and .52/300 ASA balls. There will be a three homerun limit unless you purchase an unlimited homerun ticket, which is $20 for the entire tournament or $5 per game, before the first game begins. A homerun champion contest will also be held, which is $10 to enter. The winner will get a prize and 1/2 of the homerun pot.

A most valuable player award will be chosen for both men and women based on offensive and defensive play. Overall play, along with performance in “clutch” moments, will be factors. The MVP prizes will be Russell long-sleeve pullovers.

“My brother and sister-in-law and I are from Ada and we all have been active in softball for a long time so I just throught this would be a fun way to raise money for a good cause,” Cornell said.
