Oklahoma Sports Park to host 150-lap Enduro Race Saturday

Oil Center — What do you get when you combine fireworks, professional motocross performer Derek Cook and a 150-lap Enduro Race? Answer: a full night of action and entertainment at the Oklahoma Sports Park.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. Saturday, and the enduro race will kick off the night at approximately 7:30 p.m. Cook will be available for autographs during portions of the race and then wow the crowd with amazing stunts on his motorcycle.

“If you’ve never seen Derek Cook perform, you won’t want to miss it,” said Oklahoma Sports Park owner George Welch. “The stunts he pulls off in mid-air are nothing short of amazing.”

Cook is from Piedmont and has been riding motocross since he was around 2 years old.

“Derek is a family man with a wonderful wife and two amazing little girls. We are excited to be able to bring him back to Oklahoma Sports Park,” Welch said.

What separates an Enduro Race from normal races held at the local dirt track is there is very little stoppage during the 150-lap event.

“If a car dies in the middle of the track during the race, then it stays there and becomes part of the track. They will have to drive around it,” Welch said.

Racers of all ages like to compete in enduro races. The top finishers will each earn a cash reward, but the driver who earns the coveted checkered flag will take home a $1,000 cash prize for first place.

“You have to be at least 16,” Welch said, “but other than that we have had people anywhere from 16 to 72 years old compete in past enduros.”

Fans never know what types of cars will be featured in an Enduro Race.

“There is everything out there from Lincoln Limousines to Honda Civics,” said Welch.

Regular racing is out this weekend, but a number of the drivers who show up weekly at the Oklahoma Sports Park are likely to be competing in the Enduro Race, according to Welch.
