Lady Cougars play in the snow

Ada — The inexperienced Ada High girls golf team battled some of the top teams in the state, a challenging Greens Country Club, cold weather and snow at the Putnam City North Tournament on Monday.

The Lady Cougars finished fifth in the team standings with a 423 score, just three strokes behind host Putnam City North.

“Now you can’t always predict the weather and we are used to playing in cold, strong winds and many times rain … but snow?  That’s a first,” said Ada girls golf coach Ron Anderson. “The Greens Country Club is not a particularly long course but the unique design plus hitting between houses made it challenging.”

Mustang won the team title with a 374, followed by Choctaw at 380.

“I predicted we would see some of the best teams in the state going to this tournament. I wanted the girls to see and play against the best,” Anderson said. “A 374 doesn’t usually win many tournaments, but survival was everyone’s goal on Monday.”

Not everyone survived. Edmond Memorial, Norman North and Southmoore left before the tournament even began.

“The girls were not all that excited about playing in the snow, but they didn’t complain once. I was very proud of them,” Anderson said. “They say that golf is 90 percent mental — add some snow, and I believe that increases to about 98 percent.”

Olivia Pruitt led the Ada charge with a 97, followed by Meredith McGill at 104 and Rhyley Hagar at 105.

“We will travel to the southern tropics of Tishomingo on Thursday.  Rain is predicted but hopefully no snow,” Anderson said.
