ECU Tigers scorched by Oklahoma Baptist University

Shawnee —

The East Central University baseball team dropped a 22-7 non-conference decision to Oklahoma Baptist Tuesday at Bison Field.

The Tigers (5-18) tallied 10 hits in the game with three players earning two each. Seniors Justin Gibson, Benny Woodard and Sam Malchar all recorded two hits. Woodard and Malchar also earned two RBIs each.

Senior Will Grimes started the game on the mound for ECU, suffered the loss and moved to 0-3 on the season. Grimes allowed six hits and struck out one batter.

The Bison tallied two runs in the first two innings for a 4-0 lead before the Tigers scored their first run in the top of the third.

Gibson reached on a walk after one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored when senior Mac Grace singled to left field.

However, OBU responded by scoring four runs in the third and nine in the fourth for a 17-1 advantage.

ECU mounted a come-back in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs to cut the deficit to 17-7.

Gibson started things off with a triple to the right field fence and scored a batter later when junior Jake Caton singled to right. Grace was then hit by a pitch and senior Andrew Olson walked to load the bases. Senior Paul Guardado was then hit by a pitch to score the second run of the inning. Woodard added a single to left that sent two runners across the plate.

Junior Chris Lane then loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. That set Malchar up for two RBIs when he singled to right field.

The Bison added two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two more in the seventh for the final outcome.

The Tigers will remain on the road for a non-conference game at Oklahoma Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m.
