HUTCHINSON, Kansas — — The Ada Braves’ American Legion baseball team got off to a 3-0 start after play Thursday and Friday in the New Level Showcase.
The Braves opened play on Thursday with a 6-0 shutout of the Junction City Hawks. Then on Friday, Ada beat the Rawlings Wichita Reds, 5-2, and Next Level Baseball of Kansas City, 4-3, on Friday. The Braves were scheduled to play one more game in pool play on Saturday (there were 12 pools) before going to bracket play later Saturday and through Sunday.
"We’ve been playing solid defense. We’re throwing strikes and letting our defense do their jobs," said Ada Braves head coach Travis Graham.
Ada Braves 6, Junction City Hawks 0 (6 innings)
Right-hander Tristan Wood (1-1) allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out eight in pitching all six innings.
The Braves broke open a 1-0 advantage with a five-run sixth as Zach Lewis led off with a single and scored off Cruz Villafranco’s double, which triggered the scoring onslaught.
Ada won the game, despite having just three total hits. The Braves were helped by three Junction City errors.
Ada Braves 5, Rawlings Wichita Reds 2 (6 innings)
Walker Whitworth stole home for a 3-2 lead as the Ada Braves cruised on to the three-run victory.
Parker Henderson followed with a two-run single for Ada, which compiled six hits.
Tucker Elliott (1-0) earned the pitching win in relief of starter Ty Gibbs. Elliott gave up no runs on just one hit and two walks while striking out one. Gibbs allowed the two earned runs off two hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Easton Elliott and Woodrow Lankford each contributed a double for the Braves.
Ada Braves 4, Next Level Baseball 3 (5 innings)
Kiyaanii Bohan (1-0) gave up just three earned runs off three hits with one walk over four innings while Whitey Fortner hit a big two-run single as the Braves moved to 3-0 in the tournament.
Gage Allen relieved Bohan in the fifth to record the save.
Ada was scheduled to play the B.C. Cubs, of Colorado, on Saturday afternoon, but the remainder of the tournament was canceled Saturday due to rain. The Braves season record is now 3 and 4.
