NOTEWORTHY: The Byng Lady Pirates had their best showing of the year and it almost resulted in a trip to the Class 4A State Tournament. The top seven teams at each regional earn state berths and Byng finished eighth, just behind No. 7 Anadarko.

COACHES QUOTE: “All five girls ran their best time of the season, so I was proud of their effort. They beat a few teams who had finished ahead of us in earlier meets,” — Byng head coach Clint McGaha.

NOTEWORTHY: The Byng Pirates got healthy just in the nick of time to post a strong showing at the 4A Regional Cross-Country meet in Norman. Sam Sweet was runner-up in the regional race with a time of 17:11, just five seconds off the championship mark set by Madill’s Jose Delacruz (17:06). Dusty Delozier was 15th in 17:59. Both Sweet and Delozier were All-Region runners.

COACHES QUOTE: “We finally had all our guys healthy and ran our best race of the year by far,” — Byng head coach Clint McGaha.

Up Next: Byng will compete at the Class 4A State Cross-Country Meet Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe High School at 12:45 p.m.

  • Cougs continue to win Ada stretches win streak to seven

    Gabe Simons jump-started the Ada offense with his three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the second before the Cougars pushed across six more runs in the bottom of the fourth, sending Sulphur packing 9-1 Thursday evening at Cougar Field.

    As senior Walker Whitworth was bombing in the final five 3-point shots of his remarkable Ada High career, he was resetting the school’s triples record at 151. Across the way at the A-Town Barber Shop, barber Erick Gray did not even know he owned the record of 146, much less that someone was breaking it.

    The East Central University softball team clinched a spot in the 2014 Great American Conference Tournament with a sweep of Southwestern Oklahoma State Saturday in Weatherford. The Lady Tigers (25-20, 17-15 GAC) first defeated the Bulldogs (11-33, 7-25 GAC) 9-7 and then 9-0 in five innings in the second day of the series.
