Silo sends No. 4 Latta home early

Latta —      In Class 2A district action on Friday, the four-ranked Latta Lady Panthers were upset by the Silo Lady Rebels 5-2 in the third and deciding championship contest.

It looked as though Latta was going to pick up where it left off in the second game on Thursday (a 10-3 Latta win), as the Lady Panthers scored two runs in the top of the first off of two hits. But the LHS bats went cold after that, as Latta managed just two hits the rest of the game. Silo pounded out 10 hits and played error-free softball to claim the district title.

In the first, senior Shelbey Parnacher led off the game with a walk. A triple by fellow senior Madison Abney scored Parnacher. Maria Priest popped out to the first baseman in foul territory, but Abney tagged up and scored for a 2-0 early lead.

That lead did not last long, though. Riley Newton led off with a single for Silo in the bottom half of the inning. A sacrifice by Adyson Barber moved Newton over to second. Karissa Marshall then singled to put runners at the corners. Winning pitcher Mary Grider helped her cause by ripping a single to right and pushing both runs across to knot it at 2-2.

In the bottom of the third, it looked as though Latta would regain the lead. Parnacher singled to lead off the inning. A speedy Parnacher made it all the way to third on a sacrifice by Chelsea Alexander. Madison Abney then popped up to the first baseman in foul territory back behind the base — a similar play to the one she scored in earlier in the contest. Parnacher tagged up and raced home. However, the umpire behind the plate said Parnacher left the bag early and called her out for the third out of the inning.

Latta managed only one base runner the rest of the contest.

Silo tacked on two more runs in the third and a single run in the fourth for the final 5-2 score.

In the game, Newton finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Barber went 1-for-2 at the plate. Miranda Parr was 1-for-3 with two RBIs, and Grider finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.

For Latta, Parnacher finished 1-for-2, while Madison Abney, Jordyn Scott and Maebree Abney all added a hit apiece.

The Lady Panthers finish the season at 25-7. They say goodbye to seniors Shelbey Parnacher, Madison Abney, Jordyn Scott and Anna Wood.

Silo advances to this week's regional tournament with a 14-17 record. However, the Lady Rebels have lost seven one-run contests this fall.
