No. 5 Latta edges third-ranked Colbert

Carla Harris

Latta —

Class 2A No. 5 Latta scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to upset No. 3 Colbert 2-1 in a fast pitch softball thriller Monday night at Swanson Field.

Latta improved to 9-2 on the year while Colbert fell to 9-4.

The Lady Panthers got a huge hit from Jordyn Scott — a triple to right-center field — to lead off the inning. Madison Abney hit a sharp line drive to the second baseman, who was unable to cleanly field the ball, and Scott scored to knot the game at 1-1.

Savanna Humphrey laid down a bunt to advance Abney to second, and beat the throw to first for the infield hit. Taylor Bates also laid down a bunt and reached first as Colbert tried to get Abney at third, but the third baseman could not hang on to the ball and bases were loaded with no outs. Tyler Whitney then came in to pinch hit. She only saw one pitch as the ball went past the catcher, and Abney scored to give Latta the come from behind win.

Maria Priest got the win on the mound as she only gave up two hits and struck out five.

Latta threatened in the first as Chelsea Alexander reached on an infield single and advanced all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt. However, the Lady Panthers could not get a run across.

Colbert had base runners in each of the first three innings, but the Latta defense held firm.

The visitors finally broke the ice in the top of the third. Makayla Pierce reached on an error, and advanced to second on a sacrifice. Hanna Guajardo then hit a grounder and Pierce headed for third. Latta tried to get her out, but she beat the throw. Guajardo headed to second to attempt the steal and the throw went high allowing Pierce to score. Guajardo headed to third on the overthrow, but Madison Abney quickly threw to Parnacher for the out. Latta got the third out on a grounder to first, but Colbert had grabbed a 1-0 lead.

That would be the last inning that Latta would allow any Colbert base runners. Priest only had to face nine batters through the last three innings.

Scott hit a double to lead off in the fifth, but was left stranded.

In the sixth, Parnacher reached on an error and Alexander had a single, but once again Latta was unable to advance the runners. The Lady Panthers though would not be denied in the seventh.

Alexander finished 2-3 and Scott was 2-3 with double, triple, and a run scored to pace the LHS offense.

Latta returns to action Thursday, meeting Holdenville at 12:45 p.m. at the Prague Tournament.
