ECU women have another strong outing

Ada —    Add one more impressive win to the beginning of the season for the East Central University women’s basketball team

The Lady Tigers belted Rogers State 79-48 Saturday afternoon inside the Kerr Activities Center to improve to an impressive 3-0 on the young season.

“We’re just happy to be 3-0. We stepped up in competition (from NAIA to NCAA Division II), and we knew it would be a harder game. I think this gives us some confidence,” said interim ECU coach Emily Holombek.

The Lady Tigers again used a balanced offensive attack, getting double figure scoring from five different players for the third straight game. Senior Alycea Price also tallied her second-straight double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Ashley Robison added 15 points, junior Ashleigh Kelman-Poto contributed 12 and juniors Erin Walling and Janee Garza both tallied 10.

The game started out as a defensive battle, with both teams holding each other to four points in the first four minutes.  With 15:48 left in the first half, ECU made the first push and used a 12-2 run over the next five minutes to earn a 16-6 advantage. The Lady Tigers kept up the pressure through the first half, building the lead to as  many as 24 before going to the locker room with a 39-18 lead.

After ECU scored the first two points of the second half, the Hillcats (1-2) used a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 15, with 18 minutes left to play. The Lady Tigers kept the advantage between 15-18 points for the next 7:30 before again pushing the tempo and stretching their lead to 30 points in the final 10 minutes of the second stanza.

ECU used a stifling defense to hold the Hillcats to 25.9 (14-of-54) overall shooting from the field and a 5-of-20 outing from 3-point range. The Lady Tigers also forced 21 turnovers, recording 25 points off those mistakes.

“We sat down and moved our feet so much better, and that’s a good thing because we worked hard on that in practice all week,” Holombek said. “It’s really great to see that type of improvement because that’s what’s going to get us to the conference tournament.”

ECU will now prepare for Great American Conference action, with Ouachita Baptist set to come to Ada Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. tip.

“The caliber of teams we’re about to start playing is going to step up another notch or two. We need to continue to play that type of defense,” Holombek said.
