Ada High football coach Matt Weber said he won't really be able to evaluate his team until the Cougars put on pads Friday.

"Football without pads isn't really football, so it's hard to tell," Weber said during a break midway through Tuesday morning's first preseason practice at the McBroom Football Complex.

Expected to challenge for a state title as they drop back to Class 4A from 5A this fall for the first time since 2007, Weber's squad is loaded with veteran players, particularly at the skill positions. He said Tuesday's practice, which stressed defense, wasn't exactly the start he had hoped for leading up to Saturday's Maroon and White Scrimmage.

"I did a lot of bad coaching and left out some fine points," he explained. "We need to be better tomorrow."

One area where Weber saw what he wanted Tuesday was in leadership by arguably the most talented group of seniors he has had in his five seasons at Ada.
