MOSS — Tupelo’s third-ranked (Class A) Lady Tigers lost to No. 1 Coleman to start Saturday’s action but rallied through the loser’s bracket and beat Coleman in the final two games to capture the title in a rugged field at the Moss Tournament.

“We weren’t mentally ready to play when we got there — we made stupid mistakes and just weren’t in the game,” Tupelo coach Brian Davis said after watching his club beat Moss, 6-3, in a loser’s bracket contest before outscoring Coleman, 10-6 and 9-2, to claim the crown. “After the game with Moss, we got focused and played well.”

Led by the hitting of sophomore shortstop Katie Campbell, the Lady Tigers pounded out 34 hits in their final three games, and pitcher and clean-up hitter Katelyn Roberts (who improved to 33-5 on the season with her three wins Saturday) combined with Campbell for six hits, six runs and three RBIs in the deciding game.

“If Necessary” Championship Game

Tupelo 9, Coleman 2

Campbell’s two-out triple (one of her five extra-base hits in the final two tournament games) and RBI singles by Roberts and Kylie Curry gave Tupelo a 2-0 first-inning lead in the “if necessary” contest, and Campbell singled to start a three-run third inning that also featured RBI singles by Curry and Kassi Fortner.

After Coleman scored a run in the bottom of the third, Tupelo made it 7-1 with a two-spot in the top of the fourth on singles by Kendra Pearce and Desiree Bell, a fielder’s choice and Roberts’ two-run double, and the Lady Tigers wrapped up the scoring with a two-spot in the sixth sparked by Campbell’s double.

Fortner had two hits, and Curry finished with three RBIs in the win, which left Tupelo at 35-5 this spring.

First Championship Game

Tupelo 10, Coleman 6

Tupelo broke open a tight game with three runs in the second and two more in the fourth and cruised to the victory, avening the earlier loss to Coleman and setting up the final game for the tournament title.

Campbell had four doubles in the contest to highlight rallies in the first, second, fourth and seven innings, and she scored twice and drove in six runs.

Bell’s RBI triple, Campbell’s double and Roberts’ RBI single highlighted Tupelo’s three-run first, Campbell stroke a three-run double in the second as Tupelo’s 3-2 lead after one inning ballooned to 6-2, and Campbell’s two-run double in the fourth made it 8-2.

Tupelo scored its final two runs in the seventh with the help of two Coleman errors.

Bell was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI in the win, and Kendra Pearce had two hits and scored three times for Tupelo.

Loser’s Bracket

Tupelo 6, Moss 3

Tupelo got RBIs from four different players to take a 6-1 lead after one inning and went on to beat sixth-ranked Moss (which eliminated Roff earlier in the day) for the second time in as many days in a game that featured six errors by each team.

Campbell, Curry, Brittanie Williams and Pearce all drove home runs with base hits in the first, and Pearce finished with three hits in the victory. Curry also went 2-for-3 for the Lady Tigers.

Winner’s Bracket

Coleman 9, Tupelo 2

Coleman grabbed an 8-0 lead after two innings, and Tupelo never threatened, managing just five hits against Coleman starter Devin Holder and committing four costly errors.

Desiree Bell and Heather Martin each singled in a run for the Lady Tigers in the loss, which dropped Tupelo to 33-5 on the season.
